TYRONE JEFFERSON
DIASPORA CONNECTIONS, INC.

    Tyrone Jefferson
Bar

Born in New York City and raised in Charlotte North Carolina, Tyrone joined the famous singer James Brown in 1979 and quickly rose to the position of music director by 1980. From 1981 through 2006, Tyrone had occasional engagements with the "Godfather of Soul" - who called Tyrone for "Special" events. During one such event at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Downbeat magazine said "... Tyrone Jefferson let loose on a solo that put him in the company of great JB instrumentalists like Fred Wesley." (Dec 2006)

In 1983, Tyrone was one of six composers around the world commissioned by the Minister of Culture in Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe French West Indies to collaboratively write a composition entitled "A Hymn For World Peace".

In 1989, Tyrone started his music publishing company Diaspora Connections, Inc. and produced his first album as a leader entitled "Free Your Mind" followed by a second self-produced recording in 1994 entitled "Connections". This recording featured Grammy-Nominated jazz singer Carla Cook and New Jersey poet laureate Amiri Baraka who also wrote Tyrone's liner notes.

In 1999, Tyrone started an organization in Charlotte, NC called "A Sign Of The Times" to perform and promote his favorites styles of music – classic R&B, Swing and Mainstream jazz, and classic Salsa. In 2006, the organization became A Sign Of The Times of the Carolinas - a 501(c)3 non-profit tax-exempt organization.

In 2009,  poet laureate / activist  Amiri Baraka  included in his book entitled Digging: The Afro-American Soul of American Classical Music (University of California Press, 2009, Chapter 61) an extended review of Tyrone Jefferson's 1994 CD entitled "Connections".  He writes: "It's good to hear this kind of set coming back.  Connections indeed, ... it all swings.  Gospel swing. Blues swing. Swing swing. Bop swing.  Plus to connect it correctly and like it is, he's got Native American swing ... and Latino swing.  Tyrone Jefferson, with his pretty horn and advancing consciousness, is just trying to make us remember. "

Tyrone has also been featured in several magazines including Black Elegance, Sister-to-Sister, Carib Magazine, and the Charlotte Magazine.
